…And A Happy New Year!: Game Show Watchlist for January 2021

To quote the quirky and short-lived late 70s Jay Wolpert-produced Tom Kennedy-hosted game show, this month’s lineup of new game shows and game show specials is enough to make you say “Whew!. From Alex Trebek’s emotional final week on Jeopardy! to Jeopardy! juggernauts chasing down contestants on a new ABC game show to Beat The Chasers returning to U.K. primetime television, there is a lot going on this week and this month in the world of game shows.

Beat The Chasers

Premiere Date/Time: Currently airing on ITV from Sunday, January 3-Friday, January 9 at 9:00pm ET

Why You Should Watch: This spinoff of The Chase was warmly welcomed by millions of viewers in its first outing in 2020 and has even inspired Australia’s Seven Network to adopt their own excellent version.

Jeopardy!

Week To Watch: Monday, January 4-Friday, January 9 (Check your local listings for air times)

Why You Should Watch: This week will be an emotionally rough one for so many viewers who have enjoyed watching Alex Trebek enthusiastically host Jeopardy! for nearly four decades as his final five episodes will air this week in syndication.

Get The Clue

Premiere Date/Time: Monday, January 4 at 4:30pm ET on Game Show Network

Why You Should Watch: This word association game show returns for its second season with host Rob Belushi and its new socially-distanced format. The previous season had two four-player teams.

Ellen’s Game of Games

Premiere Date/Time: Monday, January 4 at 8:00pm and 9:00pm ET on NBC

Why You Should Watch: The fourth season of the temporarily audience-less Ellen’s Game of Games resumes with its new, improved and more challenging $100,000 bonus game “Hotter Hands”.

The Hustler

Premiere Date/Time: Monday, January 4 at 10:00pm ET on ABC

Why You Should Watch: Similar to Dirty Rotten Cheater, this is a brilliant and intriguing game show to check out if you enjoy the popular video game Among Us combined with trivia. This is the first game show Craig Ferguson has hosted since 2017, after scooping up two Daytime Emmys for hosting Celebrity Name Game for three seasons. 

The Wall

Premiere Date/Time: Monday, January 4 at 10:00pm ET on NBC

Why You Should Watch: The Chris Hardwick-hosted multi-million dollar game show returns for season four on NBC. 

The Price Is Right At Night

Premiere Dates/Times: Wednesday, January 6;  Wednesday, January 13; Wednesday, January 27 at 8:00pm ET on CBS

Why You Should Watch: In the upcoming specials, actor/comedian Adam Devine and rapper/entertainer Ludacris help contestants to win thousands in cash and prizes and win money for their charities. 

Name That Tune

Premiere Date/Time: Wednesday, January 6 at 9:00pm ET on FOX

Why You Should Watch: The classic musical guessing game show known for it is iconic catchphrase “I can name that tune in [insert number here] notes” finally returns following a 36-year hiatus. It’s great to see Name That Tune back on the air since it was last rerun in 1996 on The Family Channel (now FreeForm), perhaps mainly due to how expensive it is to buy the rights to play each song on each episode.

Celebrity Wheel of Fortune

Premiere Date/Time: Thursday, January 7 at 8:00pm ET on ABC

Why You Should Watch: Wheel hits the primetime stage for the first time in its 46-year history. Features 24 stars including Holey Moley’s Rob Riggle, Joe Tessitore, Jeannie Mai and The Price Is Right’s Drew Carey, America’s Funniest Videos/Catch 21 host Alfonso Ribeiro and Paul Reubens (formerly known as Pee-Wee Herman)

The Chase

Premiere Date/Time: Thursday, January 7 at 9:00pm ET on ABC

Why You Should Watch: The Chase returns to American television for the first time since its initial run on GSN from 2013-2015. Sara Haines, co-host of Good Morning America and The View, hosts this version with Jeopardy! champions Ken Jennings, Brad Rutter and James Holzhauer acting as the resident Chasers.

Week To Watch: Monday, January 11-Friday, January 15 (Check your local listings for air times)

Why You Should Watch: Starting January 11, Ken Jennings will be one of several temporary hosts of Jeopardy! until the show names its permanent host.

People Puzzler

Premiere Date/Time: Monday, January 18 at 6:00pm ET on Game Show Network

Why You Should Watch: This is Game Show Network’s premiere of its new crossword game show with Leah Remini, former star of The King of Queens star and Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath, hosting the new series.

Let’s Make A Deal Primetime

Premiere Dates/Times: Monday, January 18 at 9:00pm ET on CBS

Why You Should Watch: Bob Hearts Abisohola stars Billy Gardell and Folake Olowofoyeku make an special guest appearance on the special episodes, which also features over $300,000 in prizes at stake to lucky traders.

To Tell The Truth

Premiere Date/Time: Monday, January 26 at 8:00pm ET on ABC

Why You Should Watch: The lie-detecting game show returns for its remarkable sixth season this month. Black-ish star Anthony Anderson and his matriarchal co-host Mama Doris return to host the series.

The Misery Index
