There is a lot to look forward to in the next couple of months in the wonderful world of game shows including the return of ABC’s Fun & Games summer lineup and FOX’s pair of primetime hits in Beat Shazam and Love Connection. For now, this article will focus on the shows and special events to keep an eye on this month as they either make their series debut or season return.
Who Wants To Be A Millionaire: May 5 at 9:15pm on ITV
Beginning this Saturday to mark the show’s 20th anniversary, Millionaire returns to the UK on ITV after a five-year hiatus. Seven new hourlong episodes will air through May 11 and Jeremy Clarkson, former host of Top Gear and current host of The Grand Tour, will take the helm this time around. The return of Millionaire introduces viewers to a slightly renovated set and a couple of new twists: a new lifeline and a movable milestone marker.
In addition to the regular Phone-A-Friend, Ask The Audience and 50:50 lifelines, contestants now have the option to “Ask The Host” if they get stumped on a question and Clarkson is allowed to help. Please note: Clarkson is not allowed to review the questions ahead of tapings and does not see the answer until shortly after a contestant says “Final Answer” or bails out of the game. The new lifeline is reminiscent of ITV’s short-lived game show High Stakes where host Jeremy Kyle helped contestants answer questions throughout the show.
The second new feature is the contestant’s ability to set their own second milestone. Instead of the show setting the safety nets at £1,000 and £32,000, the first will remain at £1,000 and the second is freely adjusted by the contestant to set between the £2,000 and £500,000 questions.
The £100,000 Drop: May 7 at 4:00pm on Channel 4
The decimated daytime version of the hit game show is set to debut next week with Davina McCall returning as host. In this version, a pair of contestants answer up to eight questions, including the all-or-nothing final question, while moving 40 £2,500 stacks on what they believe the correct answer is. The team keeps the remaining sum of money should they answer all eight questions correctly. The network has ordered 60 episodes of the revived game show. Channel 4 cancelled The Million Pound Drop last year as part of the network’s budget-saving measures.
Jeopardy! Teachers Tournament: May 7-18 in Syndication
After watching another competitive tournament last week, the show is set to engage more contenders for another two-week-long tourney with the Teachers Tournament beginning next week. Fifteen of the brightest educators in the country vie for a $100,000 top prize and a berth in the next Tournament of Champions in the upcoming event. Each contestant will also receive a $2,500 Farmers Insurance Thank America’s Teachers grant toward their school. Here are the teachers who will be participating in the upcoming tournament:

BattleBots: May 11 at 8:00pm ET on Discovery Channel
The intense robot-fighting competitive series returns for a brand new season thanks to Discovery Channel picking up the series after running on ABC for the past two seasons. The new season premieres May 11 at 8:00pm ET on Discovery Channel and May 16 at 9:00pm on Science Channel.
Instead of single-elimination rounds, this season features multiple head-to-head matchups including melees between all-star BattleBots competitors, undercard battles between rookies and exhibition fights. The top 16 bots with the highest scores advance to compete for the coveted Giant Nut trophy at the end of the season. Returning contenders include Minotaur, Ice Wave, Bronco, Bombshell, Witch Doctor and the reigning champion Tombstone. Chris Rose and Kenny Florian return as the show’s play-by-play commentators and analysts, Faruq Tauheed returns as the ring announcer and Jessica Chobot, former BattleBots judge, is this season’s sideline reporter.
Beat Shazam: May 29 at 8:00pm ET on FOX
The second season of the hit music game show is set to air later this month. Jamie Foxx returns to host and his daughter Connie Foxx replaces October Gonzalez as the show’s DJ. The show has three pairs of teams race to identify hit songs as quickly as possible for a chance to go head-to-head against Shazam itself for $1 million. Like last season, more guest stars will appear throughout the season including Demi Lovato, Shaquille O’Neal and Smokey Robinson.
Love Connection: May 29 at 9:00pm ET on FOX
After you tune into Beat Shazam, keep it locked on FOX for brand new episodes of Love Connection with Andy Cohen returning as host. On each episode, two single contestants go on three blind dates and return to the studio to discuss the details of each encounter. If a majority of the audience correctly predicts which blind date the contestant chooses, the lucky couple could win $10,000. Last season, if the contestant selected the blind date that was not voted by the audience, the contestant choose between going on a vacation with their option or switch to the audience’s option and win $10,000.
Mark you calendars for the May season premieres of these great game shows!
